One of three open clusters in Puppis listed by Messier, and not easy to see from Britain. This one lies close to M46 and as a cluster is the prettier of the two. It is unusual in having two NGC numbers thanks to an error in positioning on Messier's part, leaving it 'lost' until 1934.
