M57 would probably give M27 a good run as the most well known planetary nebula. It's definitely the prettiest. Lying as it does in a rich star field, even a small telescope will show it as a tiny and perfect smoke ring. With a larger telescope it is possible to see the structure of the spherical shell. A friend and I once pushed the magnification right up on a large telescope and claimed to see the central star. No-one else believed us....
