M58 is one of the huge Virgo-Coma Berenices galaxy cluster, about 70 million light years away from us. It is classed as an intermediate, between an ordinary spiral and a barred spiral, whatever that means. The uneven brightness of the arms shows up clearly in photographs and in my observation using a 12 inch reflector.
