M91 is a barred spiral galaxy which needs a reasonably large telescope and good averted vision to see detail visually. It is unclear whether M91 really is M91. It is a 'missing' Messier object and might originally even have been an unrecognised comet. It is now accepted that NGC4548 is M91. Certainly the nucleus of this galaxy is bright, although the rest of it isn't.
